Why Pool Chlorine Works

By Jim Regan

Having a swimming pool requires careful maintenance so that the water is always clean, otherwise, bacteria will start forming and this can lead to health hazards. The usual chemical that is used to keep swimming pool water clean is Chlorine. It can very effectively clean up the water surface and it is not costly.

The chemical that is used to keep water clean is Chlorine. It can keep water clean very effectively and another advantage in using it is that it is not a costly product.

When you pour Chlorine onto the water surface, two important chemicals in chlorine, hypochlorous acid (HOCl) and hypochlorite ion (OCl-), create chemical compounds that work on bacteria to remove it.

These compounds break down cell enzymes and cell structures in order to make the water safe for use. Chlorine can very effectively eliminate microorganisms and algae. It is also quite good in removing stains. When Chlorine is mixed with another important chemical, Ammonia, it is rendered harmless.

One point to note while using Chlorine is that its effectiveness is based on the water's pH level. If the water's pH level is very high, then it takes longer for Chlorine to clean it. Ideally, pH levels should be maintained between 7 and 8.

Though Chlorine is quite good in cleaning up swimming pool water, you should also understand that it has its own side effects. It has a very distinct smell which can be quite unpleasant. This chemical can also make skin feel itchy and dry. It can even make fabric colors can fade away as well.

Since Chlorine has its own side effects, people are now considering using other alternatives. One product that is quite popular in Europe is ozone. This product can clean as effectively as Chlorine and it is eco-friendly as well.

Still, Chlorine is very popular and it is necessary to use it the right way so that it brings about the best effects in pool cleaning. - 30521
